The Providence Journal ran “Gil” as a Sunday-only strip from to December 25, 2022. This World War II combat infantryman is a true Renaissance Man. Gil began on Novemas the webcomic “Gill.” King Features picked it up, renamed it “Gil” and syndicated it nationally for two years from Janu– December 29, 2013. Winners of the Rhode Island Community’s Choice Awards are revealed to the public in a winners edition. Unlike their syndicated comics, I had no contract with the ProJo, so it was an easy cut to make. Barrington Public Library now has to access to The Providence Journal Collection online which provides full-text articles on local news, issues, events. While they gave no official explanation, I imagine it was a cost-cutting measure. The new management at The Providence Journal decided to stop carrying the feature at the end of 2022. It gives me no pleasure to announce that GIL has ended. The end of 2022 saw the now Gannett – owned newspaper making cuts – Gil is one of the victims. When Norm Feuti’s Gil ended syndication at the end of 2013 The Providence Journal requested that Norm continue the comic strip there as a Sunday-only exclusive.
